Five rules, numbered and engraved, from a man who never wrote them down but never once broke them:

1. The tool that's ninety percent as good at half the price is the right tool.
2. Pay for steel, not for stickers.
3. If it can be fixed, it isn't broke.
4. Buy it once, buy it right — but don't pay extra for pretty.
5. The garden doesn't care what the catalog said.
